Our History

Pride in Our Past

In November 1916, The Hebrew Maternity Hospital, a forerunner of the Jewish General Hospital, opened in a house in the neighbourhood east of Mount Royal. In 1936, just two years after the opening of the Jewish General Hospital, more than 300 women formed the Women’s Auxiliary aiming at providing financial aid to the hospital as well as being a goodwill instrument and liaison between hospital and community.

Ante Partum (Moms-in-waiting) Program

Retired caseroom nurse and volunteers do arts and crafts with high risk pregnant women spending anywhere from 2 days to 2 months prior to childbirth, usually confined to bedrest.

Perinatal Loss Program

A significant number of women every year experience losing a baby as a result of a miscarriage, stillbirth, therapeutic termination or a neonatal death.

The JGH healthcare team strives to provide care and resources to patients dealing with this situation through improved educational materials, training and comfort care packages.

The Auxiliary has stepped up to provide necklaces with engraved baby footprints and will involve themselves for other requirements as this program progresses.

Therapeutic Dr. Clown Program

Ha-Ha moments improve quality of life for patients….

Thanks to the longstanding support of The Auxiliary, once a week two Clowns roam the JGH corridors and patients rooms, eliciting smiles and laughter. The Clowns, with their red noses and playful approach, provide welcome respite from the stress of hospitalization – their goal is to lift patients spirits.
